According to Foley artist Stefan Fraticelli, who’s worked on TV shows like “Parks and Recreation” and “Fargo” and movies like the “Conjuring” series, footsteps are the most challenging sound for a Foley artist to master. Finding the right footwear, surface, and sync is not always straightforward. For example, if he has to match a pair of high heels on-screen, real heels will produce an unpleasant sound against rocks or dirt, so he’ll use sneakers instead. And if he wants to create creepy creaking sounds on a wood floor in a horror movie, he’ll have to do it with just socks on so the sound fully comes through. Meanwhile, Stefan needs to have a really sharp ear for the subtle differences between the sounds of different types of rocks, because it won’t sound right if his Foley materials don’t exactly align with what’s on camera. Finally, keeping up with all the action on-screen involves a lot of practice in everything from rhythm to proper weight distribution. Sometimes, it sounds better to create tap-dancing sounds with your hands instead of your feet. Many of the sounds you hear in nature documentaries are not actually the real ones recorded in the wild. That might be because the sounds are too difficult to actually record in the wild or because making up or exaggerating sounds makes for a better viewing experience. These sounds are done by somebody like Foley artist Richard Hinton for Films at 59. He has worked on series like "Planet Earth II," "Frozen Planet," Netflix's "Our Planet," and Disney's "Bears." While a spider is normally too small for a human to hear, the TV series "The Hunt" contained close-up shots of spiders. So Richard played around with a slinky to make the sounds of a web launching. Meanwhile, new film equipment has allowed for time lapses that portray a plant sprouting out of the ground. To show mushrooms growing in "Planet Earth II," Richard stretched out strips of leather. And for something like lava flowing across the ground, he moved a boulder around some rocks. He has even had to do sound for the northern lights, which don't actually make noise. He gave them a reflective quality by banging two cymbals. Foley artists use objects to create sounds based on a character’s movements and interactions in movies and TV shows. Sometimes, they will find themselves making sounds for animals. Marko Costanzo is a veteran Foley artist for c5 Sound, Inc. He has who worked on movies like “Ice Age,” “Life of Pi,” and “True Grit.” Costanzo explained how complicated it was to make the sounds of a dragonfly flapping its wings in “Men in Black,” and how he captured the footsteps of a dog at different ages in “Marley & Me.” Then, we showed him an animal clip he has never seen before and had him come up with the proper sounds on the spot. Plus, when working on cartoons, Foley artists start from scratch with no production sound to match, which opens up a world of creative possibilities. For a movie with such unique sounds and audio like “A Quiet Place” these foley artists had to do things a little differently. Rather than focusing on making everyday sounds like footsteps more audible, the sound designers on the film focused on a “less is more” approach, aiming for more minimalist and more terrifying sound effects. In many Hollywood films, sound effects are added in post-production, usually in a state of the art studio but Charlie has taken to his shed with a microphone and recreates some ASMR sounds.
