It usually lasts about 40 weeks, starting from the first day of your last menstrual period. These 40 weeks are grouped into three segments called trimesters. The first trimester lasts about 13 weeks. During the first two weeks, you weren't actually pregnant because of the way your due date is calculated. But, your body is preparing for pregnancy. During the second week, an egg is released from your ovary, in a process called ovulation. Around the end of the second week, the baby is conceived in a process called conception or fertilization. This happens when a sperm from the father merges with the egg from the mother, usually in the fallopian tubes. During conception, genetic material from the mother and father combine to form a unique genetic code, instantly determining sex, hair color, eye color, and hundreds of other characteristics. This new single cell, called a zygote or embryo, is the beginning of a new human being. During the third week, the zygote divides to form a hollow ball of cells called a blastocyst. The cells of the blastocyst begin to arrange themselves into two groups. The inner group will develop into your baby, and the outer group will form tissues to nourish and protect it. During week four, the blastocyst moves into the uterus, where it hatches out of its outer layer. Once freed from this outer layer, the blastocyst can embed itself in the thickened lining of the wall of the uterus, in a process called implantation. Weeks 5 to 10 are referred to as the embryonic period. All of the major organs start to grow such as the brain, spinal cord, and heart. The heart begins to beat during this period. Structures called the placenta and umbilical cord begin providing life support for the embryo. They bring nutrients and oxygen from the mother to the embryo. Bones and muscles start to grow beneath thin, transparent skin. Toward the end of the embryonic period, the embryo starts to look more human. At the end of week 10, the embryo is now called a fetus and is about 1.25-inches long from head to rump. During the next few weeks, the arms and legs grow longer and start to move. Fingers and toes finish developing, and the baby's face becomes well-formed. By the end of the first trimester, your baby is almost three inches long. Your body experiences many changes during the first trimester. This is due to changing levels of chemicals called hormones circulating through your body. The most common first sign of pregnancy is that your menstrual periods have stopped. You may have other symptoms as well, such as nausea, often called morning sickness, that can occur at any time of day, tender, swollen breasts, mood swings, constipation, weight loss or weight gain, craving or disliking certain foods, and feeling more tired than usual. You may have only a few of these symptoms or none at all. If you have any questions about how your baby is developing, or concerns about how you're feeling, talk to your healthcare provider. MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: Pregnancy is the time period during which a baby develops inside your uterus. It usually lasts about forty weeks starting from the first day of your last menstrual period. These forty weeks are grouped into three segments, called trimesters. The second trimester goes from week fourteen through the end of week twenty-seven. At the beginning of the second trimester, your baby, now called a fetus, is around three inches long from head to rump. Around this time, your baby’s eyelids close, and the sex organs begin to form on the outside of the body. By week sixteen, your baby grows to be about five inches long. Fine hair, called lanugo, begins to develop on the head, and the mouth begins to make sucking motions. At twenty weeks, your baby can hear and swallow. And, the baby is more active. You may feel this as a “fluttering” in your lower belly. In the middle of this trimester, you may have an ultrasound exam. It will check your baby’s movement, heart rate, and size. Sometimes, the baby’s sex may be visible. At twenty-four weeks, the lungs are formed, but aren’t ready to work outside of the uterus. The heartbeat can be heard with a stethoscope. By the end of the second trimester, your baby has gained more weight and is about a foot long from head to rump. You may find that you feel better during this trimester than you did during the first three months. Some of the changes you may notice include less nausea and fatigue, darker skin around your nipples, a dark line on your skin from your belly button to your groin, called the linea nigra, stretch marks on your belly, breasts, thighs, or buttocks, swelling in your face, fingers, and ankles, and feeling your baby move. If you have any questions about how your baby is developing, or concerns about how you’re feeling, talk to your healthcare provider. #SecondTrimester #pregnancy #FetalDevelopment ANH22259

Why You Should Take Folic Acid BEFORE Pregnancy

Visit Nucleus Medical Media's website to learn more about using our content for patient engagement and content marketing: 🤍 #folicacid #folate #pregnancy MEDICAL ANIMATION TRANSCRIPT: If you are pregnant, it's important to take folic acid to help prevent certain birth defects in your baby. Folic acid and folate are two forms of the same B vitamin. Folate is the form that occurs naturally in foods, while folic acid is the man-made form, added to multivitamins and fortified foods. Your body needs folic acid to help make new cells including, brain cells, blood cells, and DNA, and RNA, the genetic material inside your cells. During pregnancy, you need even more folic acid, because your baby's body needs it too. Folic acid helps your baby's brain and spinal cord develop normally. Taking folic acid can significantly reduce the risk of neural tube defects in your developing baby, called an embryo at this stage. The neural tube begins as a tiny oval-shaped piece of embryonic tissue, which folds into a tube about 28 days after conception. When this tube closes properly, it continues to develop into your baby's brain and spinal cord. If the neural tube does not close, due to the lack of folic acid in your diet, your baby may have a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida, or anencephaly. In spina bifida, the neural tube fails to close at the bottom. As a result, the parts of the spine that enclose and protect the lower spinal cord do not completely form, allowing the cord to protrude. Children with this defect often require surgery, and have permanent disabilities, including leg paralysis, developmental delays, and nervous system problems. In the condition called anencephaly, the neural tube fails to close at the top, preventing large parts of the brain and skull from developing completely. Babies with this defect are unable to live, and usually die before birth or soon after. Folic acid may also protect against other birth defects, such as cleft lip and palate, and atrial septal defect, which is when a hole between the right and left upper chambers of the heart fails to close during development. Because the neural tube develops so early in pregnancy, often before a woman knows she's pregnant, experts recommend all women who are able to become pregnant, take a daily multivitamin containing 400 micrograms of folic acid every day. During pregnancy, the need increases to 600 micrograms of folic acid each day. Experts recommend you take this multivitamin in addition to the food folate in your diet, because your body does not absorb folate found naturally in food as easily as the man-made folic acid. Caregivers will often prescribe even 1,000 micrograms of folic acid daily to assure these minimal levels are covered. Even more may be required in some groups of women, including those with previous miscarriages, and those women deficient in a folic acid metabolic enzyme. Talk with your caregiver about the optimal dose for you. ANH11056

Is pregnancy possible with delayed periods with negative pregnancy tests? - Dr. Teena S Thomas

14.07.2016

Urine pregnancy is usually accurate upto the point of 99.5%.So a 3 results of urine pregnancy coming negative is almost sure that she is not pregnant. And a 15 day delayed period would not be because of a pregnancy, it can be many other reasons and it has to be found out. Why would a false report come? It comes because you have done a urine pregnancy early. So you have to wait for a missed period to do a urine pregnancy test. Second thing is, if it is dark yellow coloured urine, here it says it is not a dilute urine, it is a concentrated urine, and done at odd hours. So if you have done 3 early m morning samples and all 3 are negative, unlikely to be a pregnancy test, Rule out other causes of delayed periods and treat appropriately. If you have a little doubt, best is to do a blood test of beta HCG. If that is negative, it is 100% negative

Adding just a few more weeks of pregnancy can cut a newborn's risk of death in half even if the pregnancy has reached "term" adding more evidence to the argument that continuing a pregnancy to at least 39 weeks is crucial to a baby's health. The research by a team of investigators from the March of Dimes, the National Institutes of Health and the US Food and Drug Administration found that although the overall risk of death is small, it more than doubles for infants born at 37 weeks of pregnancy, when compared to babies born at 40 weeks, for all races and ethnicities.

Trying for a pregnancy? Looking for 11 days past ovulation pregnancy signs and symptoms may help! We understand that every day is a long wait after practising to conceive. If you're at 11 DPO and are eagerly waiting to know if you've conceived, watch this video to understand what you should know. Pregnancy tests detect the level of hCG to determine if you're pregnant. While your body may have started discharging hCG hormone at 11 DPO, the levels may still be low. Hence, an 11 DPO test may still be very early to determine the confirmation for some women. You can even get a negative test at this point. So, it's best to wait until after a missed period for accurate results. If you still see a negative and are sure you're pregnant, visit your doctor to determine your pregnancy. #11DOP #EarlyPregnancySymptoms #11DaysPastOvulation #11DaysPastOvulationSigns For More Information: 🤍 Like, comment, and share with Your family and friends. Positive pregnancy test vs negative pregnancy test (time lapse) example footage. See the difference between a positive and negative pregnancy test and what each one should look like. Full tutorial on how to take a pregnancy test at home: 🤍 How to tell if you are pregnant: The best way to know if you are pregnant is to take a pregnancy test at the appropriate time in your cycle (typically the day after your first missed period, and preferably in the morning). However, some tests may detect pregnancy a bit sooner. This video will show you a brief time lapse comparison of what a positive and negative pregnancy test result looks like. The test on the top has 3 drops of hCG in it, which the test will detect and give a positive result (both the control and test lines will appear). The bottom pregnancy test has three drops of urine without hCG, so the test will have the control line appear only, indicating that it detected the urine. However, the test line will no appear since the bottom test urine did not contain hCG. This particular test says to read the results at 3 minutes but no longer than 5 minutes. It is important to read the instructions that came with the pregnancy test you use, as details such as urine sample amount and time to read the test can vary. To confirm a pregnancy, please schedule an appointment with your doctor or healthcare provider. Getting pregnant depends mainly on timing. You want to make sure the conditions are right for egg and sperm to meet. Your menstrual cycle can give you clues about when your body is ready to start the process. The first step is to learn the days when you're most fertile. Most women have a 28-day menstrual cycle. That means you have about 6 days each month when you can get pregnant. That includes the day that one of your ovaries releases an egg, called ovulation, and the 5 days before. Having sex within that window is key. You can’t get pregnant without ovulation, and tracking your monthly periods is one way to get familiar with your body’s fertility. Day 1 is the first day of your period. Since the length of your cycle can vary slightly from month to month, it's best to keep track for a few months. Once you have an average, subtract 18 days from the length of your shortest cycle. This is the first day you're likely to be fertile. Next, subtract 11 days from the length of your longest cycle. This is the last day you're likely to be fertile. Having sex between those two dates will give you the best shot at getting pregnant.
